MY OFFERINGS | FOR INDIVIDUALS

Abi’s Singing Studio

On this page, you will learn a bit about my ethos, and the range of services I offer for individuals. I run a busy private practice, Abi's Singing Studio. This is the home for all voice work with my lovely students and clients.

If you are a current student or client, please use the button below to log in to our portal.

Many of my studio members are neurodivergent, living with chronic illness, or bereavement. I specialise in gentle, holistic and mindful practice for music education and voice confidence, with the age of members ranging from 5 - 80. Please take time to look through this page for my ethos, working practices, and the different services I offer for people at all stages of life.

Ethos: Therapeutic Singing for All Voices

I run 1:1 therapeutic singing lessons for voice confidence and singing for health sessions for all ages, genders and abilities. Pupils with additional learning needs are warmly welcome. I have over 20 years of experience working with marginalised groups, and currently work with the following populations; stammering, autism, long-term COVID-19, dementia, hearing loss, bereavement, chronic illness, and a range of mental illnesses.  All sessions are highly bespoke and therefore slots are limited. Safely executed within a unique and original evidence-based framework, I gently guide us through a bespoke journey of relaxation, breath work, confidence building,  voice exploration and song study.

Within singing lessons, there is a strong emphasis on the expression and interpretation of the music being studied. I work with a variety of genres, to enable you as a singer to find your particular passion and to learn about using your voice in different ways.  I am committed to sharing an inclusive and diverse range of music.

All studio members have access to an online portal, which is the home for all our work together and includes bespoke and original resources. I work to a strict ethical promise. If you require clinical music therapy, please refer to the British Association of Music Therapy.

It’s never too late to learn a new skill.

Please remember it is never too late to learn a new skill. I have often heard the phrase ‘I wish I could sing, but I can’t’. After talking further with people,  this is usually because they have been told by someone earlier in life that they ‘can’t’ or they compare themselves to others and believe their voice should remain hidden. Being afraid of singing is very common; the difference between other musical instruments and singing is that the voice is an instrument that is a part of you, not something you carry about in a box. It is a very personal part of who you are. I have several students who are in their retirement and learning to find their voice - and love doing so!

Whether you decide to take up singing lessons or not, please remember that everybody can sing and music is for everyone.

Singing for Health

I have extensive experience designing and delivering long-term and short-term programmes of sensitive singing facilitation for adolescent mental illness, dementia, palliative care, bereavement, chronic and acute long-term illness. These programmes can be delivered 1:1 in my private studio, or with small groups based in the community, health and social care settings.

I work at an intersection of psychology, music education, singing for health and voice pedagogy. For a full list of my qualifications and certifications, please get in touch.

“The work I deliver is highly sensitive and is shaped around therapeutic education.”

The work I deliver is highly sensitive and is shaped around therapeutic education. My work is uniquely crafted from evidence-based research, practical experience and specialist training. For all new clients and students, I arrange a pre-consultation. This helps us to understand the needs and goals behind our potential work together, to ensure we find the right fit for you.

My ethical promise is explicit about the difference between therapeutic educational practice and clinical therapy. I hold a BPS Accredited Psychology degree, however, I am not a clinical therapist. If you are looking for music therapy, I highly recommend the British Association of Music Therapists as a starting point in finding the right clinician for you.

Bespoke Theory and General Musicianship Lessons

When learning a new instrument, whatever it may be, people can sometimes feel daunted about also having to learn the skill of reading music, especially when this is completely new to them. I am happy to provide additional tutoring and guidance on the theory of music in separate, bespoke 1:1 lessons.

I also regularly tutor and enter students for the Graded Theory of Music Examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). The lessons can take place on a regular or ad-hoc basis, in the comfort of your own home via online video lessons. I offer regular theory lesson slots, as well as theory distance learning packages. Please get in touch to discuss further.

Mentoring and Professional Guidance

I have occasional space for mentoring professional artists, including guiding through auditions, recordings or stage work, as well as for students wishing to pursue Graded examinations. I am happy to guide you to the exam board and syllabus that suits your needs, and professional and/or personal goals.

I work with examiners who are dedicated to putting students at ease and are experienced with particularly nervous students. My students have achieved excellent exam results, with a 100% pass rate throughout the past twenty years. Former students have worked with the BBC and gained entry into SLP College, Italia Conti, Bird College, UCL, East 15 and many others.

Voice Care for All Ages

I am passionate about high-quality voice care, throughout all stages of life, and for all genders. I was a member of the first cohort to qualify as a Vocal Health First Aider. This enabled me to have the practical skills required to spot a range of vocal dysfunction and imbalance, together with keeping up to date with the very latest thinking in vocal health.

I am deeply committed to the principles of vocal health and as such, I am an associate member of Vocal Health Education and the Voice Care Centre Referral Network, a large multidisciplinary team for vocal health. This ensures my students and clients are looked after within the highest of standards.

Weddings

I always feel very honoured to be able to help a couple celebrate their special day. I strive to make the performance reflect who you are as a couple and as such I am happy to arrange music that you desire wherever possible. I can also offer a recommended list of suggestions for wedding music.I understand how important a wedding day is for a couple and therefore I always include one or more consultations before the big day to go through the music and ensure everyone is happy with the final performance plans.
