Music Generation, Ireland
October saw Music Generation Ireland’s Musician Educator Gathering, where over 250 Musician Educators gathered at Galway. First established in 2010 by Music Network, Music Generation is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education, and Local Music Education Partnerships. They provide music opportunities and education to over 100,000 children and young people every year.
I was invited by the Head of Quality Support and Development to deliver a class on ‘Creating Musical Opportunities for All to Belong’. The role of any Musician Educator holds exciting opportunities, including supporting transformational experiences for children. With this, comes many responsibilities, including inclusivity, inspirational facilitation, creativity and engagement. Ensuring all minds are valued and catered for, can be overwhelming and daunting. My offering at this event invited a gentle and creative approach to navigating a welcoming musical space for all. Our themes included instrumental pedagogy, ethical frameworks, creative ideas for promoting musicianship, and self-care for musicians.
I have also come away learning a huge amount about the process and approach of music education in Ireland. My goodness; what an inspiration. As always, there is so much value in connecting with fellow Music Educators. Collaboration is key to high-quality music education, which should be our priority for all who are lucky enough to witness the transformational experience of music on the younger generations.
Music Generation is an organisation that inhabits the ethos I work within; inclusive music tuition, designed to inspire and create musical experiences for all children and young people.
