THE MUSICAL SELF
Voice Work; Abi’s Singing Studio
I run a busy private practice, Abi's Singing Studio. This is the home for all voice work with my lovely students and clients. The primary focus is voice confidence, and developing the relationship one has with their voice. Many studio members are neurodivergent, and I work with an original neurodiverse-sensitive framework.
Consultation and Mentoring
My experience of evidence-based research, practical experience, and specialist training has led to invitations to research, guide, mentor and advise professional organisations and educators.
Singing For Health & Wellbeing
I have extensive experience designing and delivering programmes of sensitive singing facilitation for adolescent mental illness, dementia, palliative care, bereavement, and chronic and acute long-term illness.
The Musical Self; the home of gentle singing for all.
Hi, I’m Abi. The Musical Self is the accumulation of my extensive experience working in the field of voice and psychology. My life’s purpose is to help support the relationship an individual has with their voice and musical self. I specialise in therapeutic educational practice, and I have a strong philosophy that everyone has a right to sing and experience the joy of music in their lives. On this page, you will learn a bit about me, my ethos, credentials and ethical promise. Please feel free to look around the site, and get in touch if you wish to discuss working together. I look forward to connecting.
My Experience
Over the past two decades, I have dedicated my time to developing person-centred practice within an intersection of music education, psychology, voice pedagogy and singing for health. My portfolio includes teaching, performance, research, mentoring and writing. My work’s focus across all of these disciplines is the psychology of singing for neurodiversity, mental health and bereavement. My music genre is Jazz and Blues, and I regularly sing, play and make music with peers, organisations and studio members.
I have over 20 years experience of working with marginalised groups and warmly welcome connections with people who have additional needs, and chronic health conditions, as well as organisations or individuals who wish to enhance their work with these populations.
The Musical Self: The home of gentle, informed, and ethical singing for all voices, including neurodiversity, chronic illness and bereavement.
“I am regularly invited to speak at international conferences to share my research and practical experience.”
I also design and deliver long and short-term programmes of sensitive singing facilitation for adolescent mental health, dementia, palliative care, bereavement, chronic, and acute illness. I have worked with charities, the NHS and local hospices, including singing for dementia and end-of-life. My ethical promise ensures transparency over responsible and inclusive practice.
My work is uniquely crafted from evidence-based research, practical experience and specialist training. I am regularly invited to speak at international conferences to share my research and practical experience; a full list of appearances is available on request.

Kind Words
“Abi teaches in the most caring and encouraging way.”
“Abi has a person-centred approach; weaving in the technical with the practical. Abi chooses music that the student can enjoy and works through step by step to build confidence and competence. My daughter loves lessons with Abi and would go every day if she could.”
Kelly.
“The sessions have given me targeted help and support to build both my confidence and my voice. I am so pleased with the voice Abi helped me find.“
Joan.
“The sessions feel safe and nurturing. Time and space are given to just ‘be’ with your voice. I cannot recommend Abi highly enough”.
Daniel.
“I came to Abi to sing for fun. Having never sung previously I was nervous to start, but within the first few minutes, Abi made me feel at complete ease. Despite it being my first time singing, Abi made me feel confident to sing in front of her. Over the weeks, Abi has helped build my confidence in my voice. Abi is one of the most warm, kind and welcoming people I have met. If you are looking to start singing for whatever reason be it for fun or audition preparation, I couldn’t recommend Abi enough”.
