THE MUSICAL SELF

Voice Work; Abi’s Singing Studio

I run a busy private practice, Abi's Singing Studio. This is the home for all voice work with my lovely students and clients. The primary focus is voice confidence and developing one's relationship with one's voice. I work with actors, singers, and members of the community. Many studio members are neurodivergent, and I work within an original neurodiverse-sensitive framework.

Consultation and Mentoring

My experience of evidence-based research, practical experience, and specialist training has led to invitations to research, guide, mentor and advise professional organisations and educators, including AOTOS, Sing Up Foundation, Music Generation, Institute of Vocal Advancement and MD Brunch.

The Musical Self; the home of gentle singing for all.

Hi, I’m Abi. The Musical Self is the accumulation of my extensive experience working in the field of voice and psychology. My life’s purpose is to help support the relationship an individual has with their voice and musical self. I specialise in therapeutic educational practice, and I have a strong philosophy that everyone has a right to be heard, be that through song or speech, and to experience the joy of music in their lives. On this page, you will learn a bit about me, my ethos, credentials and ethical promise. Please feel free to look around the site, and get in touch if you wish to discuss working together. I look forward to connecting.

My Ethos

At the heart of my work is a commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space where every voice is valued. My approach blends voice psychology, mindfulness, and compassion, empowering people to discover their authentic voices and build lasting vocal confidence.

I believe every voice tells a story, and I am passionate about supporting people—especially those from marginalised or underrepresented communities—to express themselves fully. Whether working with professional performers, neurodiverse individuals, or those navigating profound life changes, I prioritise person-centred practice, deep listening, and emotional care.

I am dedicated to fostering a culture of curiosity, respect, and collaboration—where each person’s unique vocal journey is met with understanding and support.

The sessions feel safe and nurturing. Time and space are given to just ‘be’ with your voice. I cannot recommend Abi highly enough

My Experience

With over 20 years of experience, I work at the intersection of music education, psychology, voice pedagogy, and singing for health. My portfolio spans teaching, coaching, performance, research, mentoring, and writing.

I specialise in voice coaching and singing teaching for people of all ages and backgrounds, including actors, singers, and community groups. I provide voice coaching for professional performers, with students achieving success at the BBC, in film, on the West End, and at East 15, Italia Conti, Bird College and more. I also have extensive experience supporting SEND and PMLD populations and work closely with neurodiverse individuals (including those with stammers and autism), dementia and people in palliative care.

I am a soul singer, flautist and pianist, and I regularly perform and collaborate with peers, organisations, and studio members, fostering creativity and connection through music.

I warmly welcome partnerships with performing artists, organisations, and individuals—particularly those with additional needs, life-limiting illnesses, or chronic health conditions—and those who wish to explore or deepen their work within these communities.

The Musical Self: The home of gentle, informed, and ethical singing for all voices, including neurodiversity, chronic illness and bereavement.

“I am regularly invited to speak at international conferences to share my research and practical experience.”

I also design and deliver long and short-term programmes of sensitive singing facilitation for adolescent mental health, dementia, palliative care, bereavement, chronic, and acute illness.  I have worked with charities, the NHS and local hospices, including singing for dementia and end-of-life.  My ethical promise ensures transparency over responsible and inclusive practice.

My work is uniquely crafted from evidence-based research, practical experience and specialist training. I am regularly invited to speak at international conferences to share my research and practical experience; a full list of appearances is available on request.

Kind Words

I would absolutely and without hesitation recommend working with Abi
— Mairead

“Abi teaches in the most caring and encouraging way.”

“Abi has a person-centred approach; weaving in the technical with the practical. Abi chooses music that the student can enjoy and works through step by step to build confidence and competence.  My daughter loves lessons with Abi and would go every day if she could.”

Kelly.

“The sessions have given me targeted help and support to build both my confidence and my voice. I am so pleased with the voice Abi helped me find.“

Joan.

“The sessions feel safe and nurturing. Time and space are given to just ‘be’ with your voice. I cannot recommend Abi highly enough”.

Daniel.

“I came to Abi to sing for fun. Having never sung previously I was nervous to start, but within the first few minutes, Abi made me feel at complete ease. Despite it being my first time singing, Abi made me feel confident to sing in front of her. Over the weeks, Abi has helped build my confidence in my voice. Abi is one of the most warm, kind and welcoming people I have met. If you are looking to start singing for whatever reason be it for fun or audition preparation, I couldn’t recommend Abi enough”.
